8 Earth-friendly Children’s Books

The other day I shared on Instastories a few books from our unit study for April. Since Earth Day is right around the corner I thought for sure I wouldn’t be the only mom to be giddy with excitement when reading a book about our environmental impact to my kids. And to my delight, I wasn’t alone. I got so many requests to list these for easier reference, so here we go!

P.s. I’ve linked them here so you can easily find them. But be sure to check out thrift stores, eBay, the library, or Amazon’s used book section. Some we had, some we were able to find used, and one was printed on responsibly sourced materials.

Compost Stew: I’m convinced that everyone loves this book. A catchy rhyming book with great tips on what breaks down. It’s always a repeat request in our home.

Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt: A sweet book that takes the reader through the seasons while looking at what happens above and below ground in the garden.

Where Do Garbage Trucks Go?: I really enjoyed this one. While it is a bit heavy on facts with entire paragraphs that might be hard for young listeners, it’s full of real facts about trash that I didn’t even know. I suggest reading ahead of time, then remember a few key facts to share with younger readers while looking at the book. The good news is that this type of book will grow with us.

What a Waste: This one if my favorite! It is very factual too but any person, big or small will learn about our cycle of waste from this book. Great for grown-ups too, I imagine anyone would learn facts from this book that inspires change.

Garby the Garbage Truck: A sweet little book about a garbage truck who sees that trash is becoming a problem and wants to be a recycling truck. A simple and easy read and my boys love it.

Not for Me, Please! I Choose to Act Green: Can I have two favorites… or three? How do you choose? I think I’m partial to clever rhymes and this one does not disappoint. In a catchy and easy to understand way, this book explains that reducing and reusing are the first steps.

One Plastic Bag: Beautiful illustrations and words about one woman who wants to clean up her village, and does so by repurposing plastic bags.

Wiggling Worms at Work: If you have ever been curious about the secret life of worms, look no further. This book is sure to answer any and all wormy questions. Great for you readers too.

So, there we have it. There were a few others that I found and wanted to include on the list but I wanted to keep to only the ones that we have read so far.

Do you have a favorite earth-friendly book? I would love to hear about it so I can add it to my list.
