Here's the thing about the seasons: they're not determined by the weather outside your window. They're connected to the Earth's tilt, its journey around the Sun, and the changing amount of daylight throughout the year.

The days begin getting shorter immediately after the summer solstice in June, and by August, that loss of daylight is becoming noticeable. In the traditional Gaelic or Celtic seasonal calendar, August marks the beginning of autumn, November marks the beginning of winter, and the winter solstice marks midwinter, the shortest day and longest night of the year.

And nature responds to these changes whether it's still 90 degrees outside or not.

Plants and animals use changing daylight as a biological signal to prepare for the coming seasons. In animals, decreasing sunlight triggers hormonal changes that influence migration, reproduction, and winter coat growth. Humans respond to changing daylight too, through our circadian rhythms, melatonin production, and seasonal changes in sleep and mood.

Our modern Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, partly to correct calendar drift that affected the calculation of Easter, which is historically connected to Passover. But our familiar astronomical season dates are simply one way of dividing the year. Traditional Celtic seasonal calendars recognize February as the beginning of spring and November as the beginning of winter.

So if you're ready to put up your Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, you're not necessarily rushing the season. The harvest is over, the days are growing darker, and bringing evergreens, candles, and twinkling lights into our homes is a perfectly seasonally appropriate way to welcome winter.

Nature isn't waiting until December 21st to prepare for winter, and neither do we have to.

A little November witchcraft inspired by old English folklore and modern witchcraft. Iron horseshoes were hung above doorways to ward off witches, evil spirits, and bad luck. Which is a little ironic, considering the horseshoe was originally supposed to keep witches like me out.

1. Hand and iron horseshoe or other iron object above your door.
2. Place a cinnamon stick on the door for protection and prosperity.
3.Anoint the horseshoes with oil from right (giving) to left (recieving).

There is something particularly magical about gifts made by hand, especially those that require a little time, patience, and intention. Before potions became associated with bubbling cauldrons and fairy tales, they were part of everyday life. The word potion comes from the Latin potio, meaning a drink or draught, and throughout history, people prepared herbal remedies, medicinal drinks, infused oils, and other botanical mixtures for practical purposes. Many of these preparations were made at home using ingredients gathered, grown, or preserved throughout the year.

For the modern witch, potion-making offers another opportunity to weave magick into everyday life. And I like to think of potions a little more broadly than something we simply drink. An herbal vinegar for protection, infused honey for prosperity, a botanical oil for self-love, or even vanilla sugar for happiness and harmony can all become their own kind of potion. Herbs, spices, flowers, and other familiar ingredients carry centuries of folklore and symbolic associations, allowing us to create something that is both useful and meaningful.

And because many of these preparations need time to develop their fragrance, flavor, or other qualities, they make wonderful gifts to prepare ahead of the holiday season. There is something rather fitting about allowing a little magick to develop slowly, turning the simple act of making gifts into a ritual of patience, generosity, and care.
