Companion Plants Some plants make good buddies but others won't always get along. Since we're bringing back the Victoroy Garden, I thought I'd share my favorite companion plants that are growing well in containers on my balcony. Pictured here are dill, red onion, and purple garlic which commingle welI. Here are some more: Onions
Carrots or dill should be planted near onions because onions will repel the carrot fly. But don't put carrots and dill together. Onions will repel aphids, so plant them near aphid-prone (but onion-friendly) veggies like dill and garlic. Other onion friends: beets, cabbage, lettuce, parsnips, tomatoes, and spices like marjoram, savory, and rosemary. Tomatoes
Basil and tomatoes were made to go together, not only in sauces but in the garden too. Keep tomatoes away from cabbage, beets, peas, fennel, dill, rosemary and corn. Green Beans
Corn and beans grow well together because beans will grow up the cornstalks. Beans, corn, and squash grown together is known as The Three Sisters which we learned from Native American wisdom. Marigolds, nasturtiums, rosemary, and summer savory help repel bean beetles and are good companions too. Lettuce
Plant mint among your lettuce to keep away slugs. Plant chives and garlic to repel aphids. Beans, beets, broccoli, carrots, corn, peas, radishes, and marigolds also work. Radishes
Radishes can be planted among cucumbers to keep beetles away. They do well among carrots because they are harvested before the carrots and they loosen the soil as the carrots start to take off. Onions, beets, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, and squash are also good friends for radishes. Growing food yet? What should I add to the list?

What sacred spaces do you have in your home? I li

What sacred spaces do you have in your home? I like to think of my whole home as a sacred sanctuary but my favorite little space is my kitchen altar. It's where I like to keep a few magical ingredients close by so I'm inspired to cook and create kitchen magic with them everyday. Like the rose vinegar and rose infused oil I made for the Pink Egg Moon cycle with the Wakeful, Wild, & Wise members. My seasonal wheel chart to keep me connected to the natural world and the rhythm of Mother Earth. It's where I hang my magical wand, also known as my trusted wooden spoon. And it's where I represent the four elements:
Earth - the pinch bowl of salt
Air - the smoke from the sage
Water - the seashell
Fire - the candle. It's where I spend a few minutes each morning with an offering of coffee beans to Caffeina, the patroness of coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks or foods. She is the Roman goddess of energy, stamina, and determination. I also take time in the morning to honor the journey and the work it takes to bring these coffee beans to me. I lovingly call my kitchen Hestia's hearth. Its the place that I feel most magical aside from being in nature. To me, the kitchen is the place that most interwines our human connection to nature. Food is our most intimate connection to Mother Earth. Is your kitchen sacred?

Turn eggshells into calcium powder. We've been fortunate to have a steady supply of eggs around here and I've found myself getting even more creative lately at reducing our compost. Eggshell powder processed from hen eggs has been used as a natural calcium supplement for decades. Eggshells are roughly 40% calcium, with each gram providing 381–401 mg. Eggshells consist of calcium carbonate, along with small amounts of protein and other organic compounds. The membrane contains collagen which is beneficial as well, so no need to separate the two. It's pretty easy to make. You just crush your eggs shells using a mortar and pestal or coffee grinder. I like to thoroughly wash and boil them first to make sure they are clean. How to use it? In the garden - plants like tomatoes like a little extra calcium and the courser eggshells can deter slugs and snails. To make toothpaste - If your powder is extra fine, it can be mixed with baking soda and/or clay to make tooth powder or paste. In smoothie - if you are looking for a little calcium boost, try a smidge of powder in a smoothing. For protection - Cascarilla powder comes from the Hoodoo tradition and is made from eggshells ground down into a fine powder. It's often sprinkled around the outside of the home for protection. Do you eat eggs? We only eat eggs from hens that we know. Growing up, I had chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. By now I'm sure we are all working on our home jungles. As someone who took their time learning the language of houseplants, I thought I would share my favorite, easygoing houseplants (that won't die on you).

Snake Plant (sansevieria) - This hardy plant will do just fine in any type of light. They don't need a lot of water, are not sensitive to temperature changes, and don’t require any additional care. Start here. Monstera - Adaptable to almost all light conditions and somewhat drought tolerant. Dracaena (corn plant) - They make good houseplants because they are tall and narrow, with controlled growth, and can withstand a fairly significant amount of neglect... trust me. Pothos Ivy - Air purifying and easy to care for and share by propagating. Hedgehog aloe - Cousin of the Aloe Vera, this low maintenance plant requires very little water. Spider Plant - Likes bright, indirect sunlight, but will tolerate low light areas where other plants might not thrive. Propagate and share spider babies. Jade Plant - Thick lush leaves like a succulent, slow-growing, and can live for many many years. Rubber Tree - Can grow into an 8-foot-tall tree for a major pop of greenery in a room. Or prune it to keep it small. Dieffenbachia - The whole plant can grow 6-feet high and the leaves up to a foot long. These can be great large indoor plants too. Ficus Plant - This tree likes full but filtered sun. They have hardy green, shiny leaves that look lush in any room. Heartleaf Philodendron - Probably the first plant I was ever able to keep alive indoors. They can grow in some of the lowest light and though they like water, they are forgiving if you forget. Again, just trust me. What houseplants do you like?

Hello Pink Moon Month. We're officially in the Pi

Hello Pink Moon Month. We're officially in the Pink Moon lunar cycle or Pink Egg Moon as I call it based on my own interactions with nature. It's also been called the Sprouting Grass Moon, Fish Moon, Egg Moon, and Seed moon. Humans have been tracking time using the sun, moon, and stars for centries. The oldest known object that depicts the moon and sun is the 'sky disk' of Nebra which is about 4000 years old. We've always been tethered to the sky. Many of us know this moon as the Pink moon from The Farmer's Almanac, but these names we're adopted from Native American tribes.
The association (from what I've learned) comes from early springtime blooms of the Phlox flower—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox. It is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring in North America. Naming the moons isn't specific to one region or time in history and tracking the time by the moon & sun is something that can connect us to nature, rhythm, and ritual. Look around, what do you see happening in nature right now? What food is in season, what are the animals up to, how are you connected to it all? Need some help? Start a nature journal, phenology wheel, create your own seasonal wheel, name the moons and seasonsons based on your observations, interactions and experiences with the natural world where you live.

These little beauties don't often get the love they deserve. Part of the Aster family, like sunflowers, dandelion is one of the most nutritious edible weeds.⁠

The flowers can be used to infuse oils and vinegar or eaten fresh. Make dandelion vinegarette to dress a salad when you need a boost of boldness.⁠
⁠
Like other wild greens, they can be prepared in a variety of ways. Sautéed in oil, used in casseroles, or eaten raw in salads. I like eating raw greens in early spring or late fall when they are still tender. Eat dandelion greens if in need of extra self-nurturing.⁠
⁠
The roots can be eaten like boiled carrots or dried to be used in a tea.⁠ Use when you need a little pep in your step. Don't forget to ferment the stems.

Planting a seed is Earth’s magic in action. It is the magical mixture of soil, water, seed, and sun that encourages new life to burst forth and grow. Like eggs, seeds are symbolic of new life.⁠

Those little sprouts are the first stirrings of Spring in the womb of Mother Earth.⁠
⁠
The garden, indoors or outdoors, can be the living intersection between intention and action. Working with plants can be a way to connect with our dreams and goals on a deeper level. As we care for the plants that we started as seedlings we reinforce the intentions that we set at the time of planting.⁠

A seed can be a single grain, yet it is the source of a thousand grains. It can be stored for many years, and then be stirred into life in days.⁠
⁠
Dormant, still, silent, the seed speaks of unimaginable potential. The seed is the first and last step in the cycle of most plant life. Seeds can lay dormant for years then arise, carrying new life forth.⁠

It takes time and patience to plant a seed and wait for the plant to rise and become full in its expression. Waiting and witnessing new life to form reveals it’s splendor.⁠

Turn orange peels into vitamin C powder.⁠

I'm sharing another of my favorite ways of consuming rather than composting.⁠
⁠
Did you know that 1 tablespoon of orange peel provides 14% of our daily value of vitamin C — nearly 3 times more than the inner fruit. The same serving also packs about 4 times more fiber. So before you compost try asking yourself, can I eat that?⁠

Here's how:⁠

⁠
Dehydrate orange peels either in a food dehydrator or on the counter. It's really dry where I live so it takes less than 24 hours on the counter for me.⁠
⁠
Once they're good and crispy break them up into smaller bits and either use them in tea or grind them into a powder. I much prefer a coffee grinder but on occasion will use an old-fashioned mortar and pestle.⁠
⁠
Store in an airtight container preferably in the fridge. You can add a rescued silica packet if you have one. I like to save the ones that come in my supplement bottles.⁠
⁠
The powder is great added to smoothies, honey, tea, or juice. I also like to mix it with salt for a bath soak or mix it into a sugar scrub.⁠ Or, I'll sprinkle a little on my door step to invite prosperity.

I got CALLED OUT!! In 2017, as I excitedly walked up to my regular circle of women at the center for Goddess study, I said the phrase that will never leave me. “Hey, guys! I baked something and I would love to know what you think?” Rev Anna responded, “When we turn into guys, we’ll let you know.” I was speechless. I had never thought twice about this phrase before. A simple figure of speech that was so ingrained in my language. It became like nails on a chalkboard. I heard it everywhere. Later in a class, Dr. Candace Kant and Rev Anna shared an article titled: Heretics, Hussies, Housewives, & Hags that listed a history of English words and their evolution in meaning. Words referring to women undergo this process more often than those referring to men. Here are a few that are interesting: Guy - Grotesquely or poorly dressed person. Originally in British English in 1806. Then meaning fellow in British English in 1836. Later in 1847, American English also meant fellow. Hussy - Housewife. Sometimes even a thrifty housewife. Then it was expanded to mean any woman or girl, married or not. By the 1650's it became a serious way to indicate a woman of loose morals and by the 19th century, it meant a lewd woman. Hag - Holy Woman. Hagiology still means the study of holy matters and saints. Shakespeare’s verb hagged meant to be bewitched. The first element probably is cognate with Old English haga "enclosure, a portion of woodland marked off for cutting” or hedge as in Hedge Witch. Witch - Wise one. From the Middle English “wycche” which was from the Old English/Anglo Saxon “wicce” (pronounced witcheh, female), “wicca” (pronounced witcha, male), or plural “wiccan”. The earliest appearance of the word “wicca” is in a 9th-century manuscript where it is used to indicate a sorcerer or Cunning Folk.
