Returning Home to North Carolina’s Magick | Between You and Me

A Witch's Return to Her North Carolina Roots

Returning home to North Carolina was like stepping into a long-lost memory, where every breeze carried the scent of nostalgia, and every path led to the heart of who I am. The air, the earth, the sky… they all whispered familiar secrets of a land where my roots dug deep. North Carolina’s landscape is a quilt of beauty and wonder, woven with magick of untamed nature. From the rolling hills to the dense forests, every corner of this state is a testament to nature’s artistry. The mountains stand tall, guardians of ancient secrets, while the rivers and oceans weave tales of time and transformation.

From tasting wild berries to feeling the sand between my toes, this trip was a celebration of life’s simple pleasures. These moments reminded me that magick is not always grand and spectacular; sometimes, it’s found in the smallest of things, in the quiet acts of everyday life.

Preparing for Safe Travels

Before embarking on my journey, I packed my trusted protection vial—a small glass bottle filled with dirt from my grandfather’s grave, salt, valerian root, angelica root, moss, rosemary, moonstone, and a pinch of black tourmaline. I slipped on my lucky jewelry and a moonstone ring that has seen me through many an adventure. Flying always unsettles me; the sky feels like a realm for birds and gods, not mortals like us. But, as the plane ascended, I found myself marveling at the view below, a collage of earth and water, held together by winding roads and blooming fields.

A Warm Welcome at Nana's House

Stepping into Nana’s garden felt like walking into a hug. The familiar scent of moist dirt filled the air, a stark contrast to the arid West. The land here is never thirsty, always brimming with life and promise. Nana’s garden was a riot of color and fragrance, every plant a testament to her green thumb and loving care.

Rediscovering the Beach

Living in a landlocked state, I had almost forgotten the ocean’s song. It was a joy to show my kids what a sleepy little beach town looked like. The waves kissed the shore lazily, and the salty breeze played with our hair. We built sandcastles, collected seashells, and dipped our toes in the cool water. The beach was a playground for the senses, a canvas painted with sea and sky.

Family and Foraging Adventures

Family reunions in North Carolina are always an affair of laughter, stories, and food. We gathered wild berries, their sweetness a gift from the earth. The scent of wild elderflowers was intoxicating, a reminder of nature’s delicate beauty. However, our adventure took an unexpected turn when we stumbled upon a cottonmouth snake. Its presence was a stark reminder of the wildness that still thrives here, a guardian of the land.

Dancing in the Rain

One morning, the skies opened up, and we danced in the rain. The earth drank deeply, and so did we. The rain was warm, washing away the dust of our travels and cleansing us anew. We camped under a canopy of stars, serenaded by a chorus of crickets and bullfrogs. The night was a lullaby, the humid air and darkness a comforting blanket.

The Wisdom of Nature

Nature is the ultimate teacher, offering lessons in resilience, balance, and beauty. Watching the waves crash against the shore or the rain nourish the earth, I was reminded of the cycles of life and the interconnectedness of all things.

As my trip came to an end, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This journey back home was more than just a visit; it was a return to my roots. I left with a heart full of memories, a spirit rejuvenated by nature’s touch, and a deepened connection to the land and family that shaped me. It was a reminder of the magick that lies in this connection to nature, a reminder that the Earth holds endless secrets and gifts.
